Stalwarts of MGD


The school has had a privilege of three distinguished principals, two of them who are no longer with the institution, Miss Lillian Godfreda Donnithrone Lutter and Miss S. Doongajee. The contribution of 3 stalwarts of MGD has been a source of great contribution and inspiration in shaping the institution in the past. The present principal Dr.(Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi took over the school in 1989 and has been an epitome for redefining the education for girls at M.G.D and she has single handedly taken the school at a level much higher than the expectations.

Miss Lillian Godfreda Donnithorne Lutter

Miss Lillian Godfreda Donnithorne Lutter, the Founder - Principal of Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School, was born in Burma and educated in England. She began her teaching career as the Head of Morlan Lane School in Moulmein, Burma. She also Headed a Teachers' Training College and trained teachers. Her stay in Burma was interrupted when war broke out. Miss Lutter set out along with her mother and sister, Miss Emma and a group of thirty odd students in a month long and treacherous trek in Dimapur in Assam. She lived in Dehradun briefly and then came to Jaipur.

In 1943, Miss Lutter Joined as the Founder-Principal of the First Girls' Public School in India, Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls' Public School.

She is a legend as far as M.G.D is concerned. She strove hard to lay each and every layer of brick and built what M.G.D is today. When the name and fame of M.G.D School spread afar, she received many accolades which she rightly deserved.

In 1943, in recognition of her outstanding work in the field of Education the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) was conferred on her by His Majesty King George VI. The same year she was awarded by the Govt. of Burma in recognition of her loyal and devoted services during Burma campaigns. Miss Lutter was also intensely interested in the girls guide movement. She was the proud recipient of the Girl Guide Award of the Medal of Merit from the Imperial Guide Headquarters, London and the rare 'Bearer' Award from the Headquarters in India, while she was the Guide Commissioner of Rajasthan. '

On January 26, 1970 Miss Lutter was awarded the Padma Shree by the then President of India, Dr. V.V. Giri. In 1974, at a special function the Nagarika Club of Jaipur presented her with a plaque, honouring her as one of its most prominent citizens. She was the President of the Jaipur Sports Association as well. In 1975, she was awarded O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). The excellent order of the British Empire was conferred on her by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the New Year's Day Honours of 1975 at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. In September 1978, the Lions Club of Jaipur presented her with a statue of the Golden Saraswati. On 17th June 1980, after serving for 37 years, Miss Lutter left for her Heavenly Abode. In 1982, Miss Lillian Godfreda Lutter was posthumously awarded The Rajasthan Shree by the Rajasthan Day Celebration Committee.


Miss.S.Doongajee



Miss Sherie Dongaji joined M.G.D as the principal in July 1981 and remained the Principal till December 1988. Her excellent educational background and experience in the field of education was an asset to the school.

Her rich experience in the field of education elevated her as a member of the senate, Punjab university and she also became member of many select committees such as the Punjab Public Service Commission, UPSC, BHU etc.


Miss. Doongaji also served as a convenor of many committees for the development of home science, as that was her favourite subject. She also conducted refresher courses for the teachers quite often. M.G.D was indeed very lucky to have an outstanding personality like Miss Doongaji. She was also presented with the nagarik award.


Dr. (Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi


Calm, poised and serene, an anchor person for all the students in M.G.D. that is Dr.(Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi, the Principal of M.G.D. Girls School. Behind the calm exterior is a woman of strong convictions and sagacity and this has won her accolades in the field of education. It is our proud privilege to have such an accomplished and dedicated lady as our principal. She has been the founder Headmistress of five schools namely Manipur Public School,lmphal, D.P.S. in Haridwar, D.P.S. in Ghaziabad, D.A.V. School in Ghaziabad and founder-Principal of D.P.S. in Vindyachal. She has also been the principal of Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya, Gwalior and Vidya Devi Jindal School in Hissar.

Apart from these achievements she is also an avid writer and has written a series of 'Bhasha Sagar' for students from Prep to 8th Standard. Her dedication to her profession has been duly recognized and she has been bestowed with various honours. In the year 1991 the Lions Club (West) presented her the Best Lady Principal award. In the same year she was given the state award for teachers and the Nagrik club also honoured her. Having risen as an educationist of great sincerity she was conferred the National Award for teachers in 1992. And that was a crowning glory for all her efforts in stressing for the best in the field of education.

Recognizing her organizational abilities, the Indian Public School Committee appointed her as a secretary IPSC for two years after which she was made the chairperson for another two years. She was also the member of the IPSC Executive Committee.

A thoroughly well-read person-she has masters degree in three subjects and a Phd. in Sanskrit. She is interested not only in academies but also in music, dance and sports. She has successfully written and directed various dance-dramas. She has taught the students, that education is not cumbersome but it is discipline for the adventure of life.

The school has seen formidable changes in the last 14 years. Significant among them being decentralization of the academic administration, change of the written examination, no examination and little home work till class IV, children get promotion on the whole years performance which is LSRW Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Appointment of house captain and for prep section and the division of the primary section into two groups with one co-coordinator for class I, II, III and other for classes IV and V. These are some of the bold administrative steps taken by the current principal after joining the institute.

Women's education and emancipation have always interested her and to her goes the credit for introducing several new courses in M.G.D. Computer Education was included as an optional subject, the commerce stream was introduced by her and she was also instrumental in reviving gymnastics. She has also revived the teaching of French and German as the Third language. In order to diversify the interest of the students in art and crafts Dr. (Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi decided to have a course in clay-modelling too.

Under her, the school has expanded to a great extent. To facilitate money matters she took the initiative to open an Extension Counter of The Bank of Baroda. The first floor of the House of Science was built in-order to accommodate the increasing number of students and a dormitory was also added to the Indira Bhawan hostel, The construction of metalled roads and renovations of the art cottage, hostels and Assembly hall was done due to her initiative.

Dr.(Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi has endeavoured to inculcate virtues of head and heart which would give each student a well-integrated personality. She has set an example that destiny is not a matter of charge, it is a matter of choice, it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved and she encourages the students to do their utmost for the highest. Her personal interest and attention will go a long way in ensuring a brighter future for M.G.D. School and the M.G.D. family can look forward to celebrating another glorious 50 years.

Recently, on 27th july 2003, the Avantika Bhartiya Samkaleen Kalakaar Sangh awarded her the Avantika Guru Dronacharya Samman 2003. The Rotary Club, Jaipur Round Town and Jaipur Marugandha felicitated Dr.(Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi on 10th September 2003 in public recognition of her services to the community as a teacher of outstanding merit.

Dr.(Mrs.) G.D.Bakshi has authored several books. Her thesis has been published in the form of a book. Another book written by her is ‘Saat Nritya Natikayen’ which received due recognition from Jawahar Kala Kendra. Her collection of poems titled ‘Sailab Ke Nazdik’ gives a deep insight to her warm, caring and sensitive self.
