It seems incredible that the Maharani Gayatri
Devi Girl’s school is celebrating its Diamond Jubliee this
year. It seems like only the other day this school started. In 1940,
when Maharani Gayatri Deviji Sahiba married Maharaja Sawai Man Singh
II, the women of this state were in purdah. The Maharaja was an
enlightened and progressive ruler and his primary concern was the
welfare of his people. It all began when two years after their marriage
Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II asked Maharani Gayatri Deviji Sahiba
if the purdah system could be eradicated. Rajmata took it as a challenge.
Soon after this Sir Mirza Ismail, the Dewan of Jaipur wanted to
start another Girls school since the school started by Maharaja
Sawai Ram Singh was already over crowded, therefore a large piece
of land was allotted for the new school and during the Construction,
the school was housed at Madho Vilas, a beautiful building on Amer
Road. Raja Amar Nath Atal, the education minister started interviewing
people, several interviews were conducted and Miss Lutter was found
to be the right person to be the founder Principal of M.G.D. M.G.D
was finally born in 1943. The school began with twenty four girls,
all daughters of the then Jagirdars or officials and the elite business
class of Jaipur.
It was a great occasion when the school building was ready. Miss
Lutter was an excellent principal, most understanding and sympathetic
to the needs of her pupils, who were mostly in purdah. She made
friends with their families and soon the purdah nasheen girls started
playing games and indulged in sports. In the beginning M.G.D was
an extended part of the Jaipur family and was invited to all important
polo matches and occasions like diwali to the city Palace. Thanks
to the Board of Governors especially Rajmata Sahibaji of Kota, who
has always taken a keen interest and attended every single meeting
at the school.
