30 students from MGD Girls’ School spent 12 days at Putney High School, London, UK last summer and interacted with their age/class counterparts; stayed with local families to get a very close and in depth feel of british lifestyles. The highlights of the visit included a 30 minutes meeting with a Member of Parliament (House of Commons) Ms. Justine Greening in which some very interesting and pertinent questions were asked and she gave forth very frank replies that had the MGDians bowled over. Next, it was the meeting with Rajmata Gayatri Devi who was invited by Dr. John, Acting Head of Putney High to be the Chief Guest for the Celebrations Evening in which both schools put up sterling shows that included traditional dances, songs from the visitors, and gymnastics(floor show), choirs (songs), and comedy by the host students. The students also visited various museums and places of historical interest like RSPCA (animal hospital), St. James’s Park, Buckingham Gate to Palace of Westminister, Victoria Tower Gardens, Tower hill, London Tower, Docklands, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Boat cruise on the Thames, Shakeaspeare’s Globe Theatre (show- The Merry Wives of Windsor), St. Paul’s Cathedral (even song), Albert Hall, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum, etc., and an out of town visit to Brighton(seaside and furniture museum).The students also had a day of work experience in which they went to the place of work of their host’s parents. The Putney High School will reciprocate the 1st students exchange by sending 30 students and 5 teachers next October. Both schools are on to something very exciting and enriching; and that’s what education should be all about.
